Schedule Your Meeting Be prepared to offer some potential meeting times when you contact the hiring manager. Instead of saying, "My calendar is wide open," which can make you sound desperate, offer two or three times that will work for you, as in, "Tuesday or Thursday afternoon between 2 and 4 are open for me." If those times don't work for the hiring manager, ask her to suggest a few possibilities. Companies hire people, not resumes. At some point, it's important to connect personally with hiring managers. Making a follow-up phone call or sending an e-mail allows the hiring manager to begin knowing you as an individual. Plus, following up with hiring managers builds your courage muscles, one small call at a time! In your career, connecting directly with hiring managers to say, "Here I am, and my talents and experience might be useful to you," is one of the most challenging steps you'll ever take. Yet, as is true with many risks we take in life, the bigger the chance you take, the larger the reward you stand to gain. If following up with hiring managers freaks you out, consider yourself normal. But if you want to take your career to the next level, challenge yourself to push beyond your limits to achieve extraordinary results. |
