So think about which activities are meaningful and fun for you, and then ask yourself, "Which groups of people get together to discuss or participate in activities involving this topic?" Input keywords on a search engine to locate potential organizations, such as "volunteer opportunities to teach adults to read," or "professional association meeting planners Colorado." The reference librarian at your local library can also help you locate potential clubs and associations. Once you begin your investigation, it's likely that you'll discover a number of possibilities.

Then, for fun, attend the group meetings or activities once or twice. You don't need to commit yourself foreverjust visit a group once or twice to see what you think. If it fits your style and interests, hooray! If not, no big deal.. .at least you gave it a try. But if you are able to find one or more groups that are a match for you, participate regularly and actively. Join committees and find ways to contribute. As you do, you'll discover that often the other members can be helpful resources in your job search.

Worry about what you'd do or say at a group meeting, or if others in the group would be friendly toward you? I agree! Meeting new people can be intimidating. Regarding what to say, one of the best strategies is to ask lots of questions of the people you meet, such as, "How long have you been a member of this group? What do you enjoy about it?" and so on. This approach shifts the focus from you to them, and most people are very happy to talk about themselves. Another idea is to e-mail the group organizer ahead of time to let her know you'll be coming and that you'd like her to introduce you to a few people when you arrive. Finally, regarding the friendliness of the group, I predict that you'll be pleasantly surprised at how welcoming members will be. In my experience, members of volunteer, hobby, and professional organizations are usually passionate about the focus of the group and are eager to meet and involve others who feel the same way.
