Connect to Others Electronically

If the idea of making connections electronically, rather than face to face, seems more comfortable to you (and it does for many Job seekers), here are some ideas for e-connecting:

E-mail individuals in your personal network about your job search goals and ask them for ideas and support.

Consider setting up a profile on an online networking site to advance your job search. Sites such as Linkedln and Ryze allow you to create a profile about your background and career goals, and then to connect to others through a variety of electronic activities. There are several levels of involvement, depending on how active you want to be. Most online networking services allow you to join for no charge and add additional membership benefits for a fee, if you choose. Most of the job searchers I know who have created their initial profiles are pleasantly surprised to discover that they already have several potential connections, as they locate a number of former coworkers and classmates.

As with most things in life, the more effort you put into your online networking efforts, the more rewards you'll see. Don't expect to post your profile and then to have a landslide of connections just come rolling in. You'll need to invest a little more effort. For instance, look for opportunities to support others in your network, and in return, you'll find others will be more active in supporting you.

Plus, if you've been job searching the same way throughout your career (and have been frustrated with the results), you owe it to yourself to try something different.

Connecting with others is an activity that can go very well... or very poorly. Because meeting new people can feel pretty risky, many job seekers would rather not chance it at all. Yet in reality, expanding your circle of contacts usually leads to a positive result, plus it can go a long way toward helping you achieve your career goals. The trick is in finding a people-connecting activity that you're willing to doand experimenting with several ideas until you find one that fits for you.
