That's what we'll cover in detail in this article, so get ready to learn how personal connections can advance your job search in amazing ways. Now I'll introduce you to several small, doable activities that will allow you to connect with people to move your job search forward from arranging a time to talk, to sending a thank-you note after your conversation. Create Calling Cards As you begin connecting with others, you'll want to be able to exchange contact information so that you can follow up with each other later. Business cards are the most common and accepted method for doing this. However, because you're job searching, you might not have a business card to use...plus, it's inappropriate to present a business card paid for by your employer for job hunting. The solution to this problem is to create your own calling cards, in the same size and look as simple business cards, imprinted with your contact info. I recommend not including a job title or career objective, such as "Marketing Manager" or "Software Programmer" on your card. Otherwise, the recipient might mistakenly think that you are working as a consultant in your own business, instead of searching for a job. Cards can be created using a template provided in your word-processing software and printed on business-card paper available at office-supply stores. Or have them prepared for you at your local photocopy shop, or online at a business card Web site such as www.vistaprint.com. Aim to have about 200 to 300 printed. |
